THE INSTITUTE
The mission of The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC), a university museum, is to provide a statewide educational and communications center on the history and culture of the people of Texas; to collect, organize, and interpret the history of both past and present cultures of Texas; to produce exhibits, audiovisual materials, publications, and outreach programs such as video conferences on these subjects for statewide benefit for general and student audiences and for schools, museums, broadcast, and public functions; to play a role in teacher training and professional development; and to engage University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) faculty and students in all the above activities, functions and programs.

Founded in 1968 on HemisFair property initially serving as the State of Texas exhibit for the world’s fair, the Institute occupies 15 acres owned by The University in downtown San Antonio (the third campus of The University). Primary activities are located in a 175,000 square foot building which houses exhibit galleries, classrooms, an auditorium, a library, conference center, staff and volunteer offices, and production facilities, plus outdoor verandas, and a park with replicas of historic buildings. The building also houses several other university departments. A major master planning effort is underway to bring the Institute to a new level of excellence as a premier university museum.

The Institute has an annual budget of approximately $4 million, a staff of 55 employees, and a volunteer staff of 400 individuals. Some 200,000 visitors, including school and adult tour groups and the general public, annually visit Institute exhibits. An additional 30,000 attend educational programs and special events, such as the Texas Folklife Festival. Outreach programs reach several thousands of students and adult groups each year.

UTSA
The University of Texas at San Antonio, of which the Institute is one of three campuses, is a comprehensive metropolitan university serving 30,000 students. UTSA offers 135 academic programs, with 49 being at the masters level and 21 at the doctoral level. With strong support from the community and its leaders, The University has embarked on its vision of becoming a premier research university as outlined in the UTSA 2016 Strategic Plan. The University has an annual economic impact of over $1.2 billion and is a major contributor to the area’s growth as it serves the multicultural population of San Antonio and South Texas with outstanding faculty, relevant academic programs, and rapidly expanding research and community service activities. The City of San Antonio, which combines a rich cultural heritage with a modern emphasis on technology, research, and education, is a dynamic home city for The University.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Executive Director reports to UTSA’s Vice President for Community Services and is responsible for the administration and management of all Institute programs, activities, and exhibits; leadership in educational programming and content production; the dissemination of historical and cultural information to the public and the schools; the development and management of volunteer programs; engaging The University’s scholarly community; and fundraising. Reporting to the Executive Director are directors for museum functions, including advancement, exhibits and collections, education and interpretation, special events, and business operations.

The Executive Director will provide distinguished leadership to further enhance the Institute’s statewide educational mission as a vital resource to strengthen and enhance the goal of The University in becoming a Tier One institution. As appropriate, the position may include a faculty appointment in an academic department at The University.

QUALIFICATIONS
The Executive Director will have demonstrated success as a leader and manager in an educational and/or cultural institution, including experience in planning, budgeting, financial and human resource management, external affairs, fundraising, and educational programming, preferably in a complex administrative environment.

An Executive Director applicant must have at least a master’s degree, preferably an earned doctorate, in one of the related humanities; and have successful experience in museum project and staff management. Academic projects and publications involving cultural or historical research both as individual and organizational effort are desirable; S/he will have a strong understanding and respect for interdisciplinary activities, ethnic and cultural diversity, and the origins, history, and character of pluralism in American life, as well as a record of success in promoting cultural diversity and gender equity in both programming and personnel. The new Executive Director will have extensive experience in working with faculty, students and staff from a museum and/or an institution of higher education and in developing exhibits and programming activities associated with scholarly work. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse internal and external constituencies characteristic of the Institute and The University as well as a successful record in securing resources and private fund development are required.

Knowledge of the history and culture of Texas and an ability to be actively engaged in the content programming of the Institute are preferred. The successful candidate will have the motivation and commitment to enhance the statewide mission of the Institute and its educational and cultural programming on behalf of The University of Texas at San Antonio.
