The JordanSchnitzerMuseum of Art (JSMA) is one of the premier Pacific Northwest visual art centers for exhibitions and collections of historic and contemporary art, as well as educational programs. The museum was recently expanded from 32,000 to approximately 76,000 square feet, with exhibition space increasing from 8,000 to 23,000 square feet. The collection numbers more than 13,000, one third of which is in Chinese, Japanese and Korean art and includes regional art of the Pacific Northwest. The Japanese collection has great depth in prints, textiles, scrolls and screens. The Chinese collection has a strong decorative arts collection, textiles and ceramic and funerary objects. The Korean collection has outstanding decorative paintings, screens and celadon ware. This is the fastest growing collection at the present time.

With approximately 20 full time and 5 part times employees and 85 student employees, docents and volunteers, the museum provides an important teaching, research, and learning environment for University of Oregon (UO) students and faculty, community school-aged students, and the community at large.

Located in the Pacific Northwest, the University works closely with the Pacific Rim countries in developing programs throughout the University. The University has a strong commitment to Asian Studies throughout its many departments; for example, The Center for Asian Pacific Studies
(CAPS ), which is an interdisciplinary research center focused on Asian studies, the Humanities Center and the Art History Department look forward to working closely with the Chief Curator to insure an integrated approach to Asian art and Asian studies.

The Chief Curator of Collections and Asian Art and Director of Academic Programs provides leadership in acquiring, managing, researching, exhibiting and interpreting the Asian art collections. S/he will organize and present special exhibitions of Asian Art, conduct research about the collections and publish articles, catalogues and books. S/he will offer lectures both at the museum and at conferences. The Chief Curator will manage a strong and dynamic exhibition and permanent collections program and work closely with the education department in presenting related educational programs. S/he will develop strong partnerships throughout the University with faculty in related academic programs, including those identified above.

The Chief Curator must be able to work closely and collaboratively with the JSMA staff, Leadership Council, and faculty, as well as various other university and external constituents. S/he must develop partnerships within the University as well as with colleagues at the regional, national and international level. This individual will be the head of a department, which is expected to grow over time with support from the University administration and outside donors. S/he will be the face of the Asian art program to collectors and donors. While this individual will not have direct teaching responsibility, s/he will serve as a resource for academic curricula and research and furthering academic ideas both at the Museum and throughout the University.


Description of Duties

Curatorial Vision (50%)

  • Provide clear direction and leadership of the JSMA curatorial program, including collections development.
  • Curate the Asian art collection.
  • Provide overall strategy and direction for the future growth of the collection and for exhibitions.
  • Collaborate with senior staff on the development of a dynamic and exciting exhibition schedule.
  • Identify potential donors and establish relationships.
  • Work closely with colleagues in the field to communicate strength of the Museum’s collection.
  • Bring a broad vision of the potential inherent in exhibitions and related programming.
  • Work closely with the university community to integrate the exhibitions throughout the intellectual and academic life of the university, and to ensure the museum contributes to the academic mission of the university.

Management (20%)

  • Supervise and mentor staff, students and volunteers in the curatorial area
  • Manage curatorial budget
  • Advise on renovations/changes in gallery installation
  • Provide and communicate vision for collections and curatorial programs to stakeholders within and outside the University
  • Manage donor relations
  • Model excellent written and oral communication
  • Write grants and fundraise, as appropriate
  • Work with collectors to build collection
  • Work with senior staff to develop curatorial policies and procedures  
  • Complete re-accreditation documents
  • Serve on senior management team

Academic Support (30%)

  • Develop partnerships with academic programs throughout the University
  • Work with faculty to develop integrated academic programs
  • Create collaborative projects within University and with colleagues at other academic institutions
  • Be recognized as scholar and peer by University faculty
  • Reach out to universities and collectors throughout Asia to explore collaborative projects

Experience and Education.

Required

  1. Minimum three years serving as a full-time senior curator and/or director of curatorial affairs at one or more art museums, preferably at a university art museum.
  2. Minimum of five years curatorial experience in Chinese, Japanese or Korean art and passion for the visual arts, both past and present.
  3. Minimum of three years experience organizing major exhibitions using the permanent collection and traveling exhibitions.
  4. Actively engaged in research and scholarship.
  5. Supervision of two staff members with a strong interest in mentoring student interns and volunteers.
  6. Ability to demonstrate commitment to cultural diversity.
  7. Produces scholarly publications, including articles, catalogues and books.
  8. Maintains a strong network of professional colleagues at museums, galleries, auction houses and among critics, art historians and collectors and donors.
  9. Advanced degree in Art History.
  10. Demonstrated ability to engage the larger community in support of the museum’s collections and programs.
  11. Well versed in professional practices of museums including AAM accreditation.
